Country afficianado Asbury Edens plays Rock-A-Bop this weekend, and we caught up with her recently to learn a little more about the woman behind the acoustic.
Could you tell us a little about your musical history and background?
Music has always been a passion of mine. Growing up, I played classical piano and performed musical theatre, then started playing the guitar and writing songs in my early 20s.
You've been playing in and around Shanghai for some time now. Where are you originally from?
I am originally from Athens, Georgia, USA. It’s a college town known for its music culture.
For those of us who haven't heard your music, could you describe your sound?
My sound stems from the music of the south, it’s a little folk, a little country.
Which particular songwriters influence your music?
I'm a country girl at heart, and love the folk stylings of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Emmylou Harris, and Nanci Griffith.
Do you work much with other musicians?
During my five years in Shanghai, I've worked with lots of musicians - I'll pretty much sing with anyone who asks me.
Any plans to release some recordings of your music?
It is on my bucket list.
Do you have a particular affinity for Rockabilly music?
For sure, especially the older legends of the 50's and 60's, like Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, and Buddy Holly.
Who are you looking forward to seeing perform at Rock-A-Bop?
Tom and Jerry! I've played a lot with them in the past and always look forward to seeing them perform.
Do you have any regular gigs happening? Where else can we see you perform?
Nothing regular at the moment, but I'm in talks with a local bar about starting a weekly acoustic open mic, and I’m also looking to put together a country band.
