Rev Run and DJ Ruckus. Not pictured: old fashioned family values.
I’ve suspected for a while that I’m becoming a grumpy old git before my time, but this has just been confirmed beyond all reasonable doubt. I thought, you see, that Joseph Simmons, aka Rev Run, who is DJ’ing at Ibiza this Saturday, was best known as a rapper, the guy who put the RUN in RUN D.M.C. and defined rap for a whole generation.
But it turns out that despite the internet, there is still an MTV generation, and they know him as the star of an Ozzy Osbourne style reality show, Run’s House. And I’d been completely oblivious of this. I thought I was down with the kids, I even had a vague idea of what a Kardashian was, but this still managed to pass me by.
Now an ordained minister, Run is the star of a reality show Run’s House, in which he and his wife Justine have ‘inspired millions of viewers by teaching old-fashioned family values applied with a hip-hop twist,’ according to the blurb on the back of his book, Take Back Your Family: A Challenge to America's Parents. As opposed to the dysfunctional Osbournes, the Run family actually get along and have been dubbed ‘the new Cosby family.’
Let’s hope the Reverend is still able to throw it down on the mic and put on a show, and doesn’t need to resort to go to the same lengths to motivate the crowd that his Grandmaster Flash did at the Black Rabbit festival. Confronted with a crowd who couldn’t quite remember the lyrics to all of his 80’s hits, the inventor of DJ’ing turned off the music and threatened to walk off stage several times before the audience made a satisfactory amount of noise.
Those of you who can break through the firewall can be privy to Run’s stream of inspiring updates, (@revrunwisdom) which might be worth bearing in mind for the Saturday night crowd at Ibiza.
