Friend of Foe are back to the grind and ready to drop their debut LP, 'My Claw is Never Limp', in a couple of weeks at Yuyintang. Produced by Acid Ponies (Laura Ingalls and Clement Pony) - until now known mainly for their own electronic productions, remixes and Djing - and with arrangements from Nichols of Rainbow Danger Club, the recording of 'My Claw is Never Limp' has been a huge project, and the result is a record with an equally huge sound, believe!
The artwork for the CD proper deserves a mention too; drawn by Ivan Belcic (Moon Tyrant, Death to Giants), the mini-comic strip depicts the story of how Rabshakeh and Mahanehdan came to be on our planet and how they hooked up with the third, final, but vital party, Bill - great work!
One of our favourite Friend or Foe songs, 'Double Down', came out fantastically, capturing the raw energy of their live shows and with a new swing to it that works really well. Rabshakeh says, "Double down; I definitely had a vision for it. He (Mahanehdan) helped me realise it with the casino noises used for the intro. 'Double down' was pretty much the second track that we wrote as a band.
Nichols did a great job with the arrangement; on the other tracks a fair amount of the guitars were recorded through a guitar modeling processor, but Nichols thought that for this song we really needed a lot of feedback, so we recorded the guitars live in a room, with the guitar right next to the amp – so there’s loads of feedback leading into the choruses if you listen to it…
When we first wrote this song I was pretty stoked and excited about it; we wrote this the first night when we started writing for this band. It’s a story about a guy who’s ruined his life by playing blackjack; it’s pretty dark, I don’t listen to happy shit! This is kind of the stuff I used to like as a kid…
Double Down:
Phat eh? You can get a sneak preview of the entire LP at Dada next Thursday where the guys will be throwing a pre-listening party. We'll have more of our interview for you next week, along with more of 'My Claw is Never Limp'.
you're ok. sometime ago we decided to simplify the spelling of our names for insipid mortals and we must not have changed it on our douban or wherever you got those spellings from.
